This piece, created by Yee Poon, captures the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the Z-Boys during the 1970s California drought, where empty pools became skateboarding arenas. Influenced by the surf culture of Venice Beach, these skaters revolutionised the sport with aggressive, freestyle tricks. Their story, seen in the film Dogtown and Z-Boys (Dir. Stacy Peralta, 2001) has dangerous origins, from surfing Venice Beach’s toughest spots to overcoming various challenges like family dynamics and inevitable fame, as skateboarding became a legitimate sport and career. The artwork pays homage to their fearless creativity, blending sun-soaked aesthetics with the gritty essence of Dogtown: the birthplace of modern skateboarding.
